What is puff pastry?
The puff pastry is a dough composed of flour, water, salt and butter. When baked, it gives a light puff pastry and can be used for sweet or savory recipes. It is sold pre-prepared in the frozen foods section of the grocery store, usually near frozen pie crusts.
What can I use in place of puff pastry?
Although puff pastry is my favorite ingredient for these puff pastry packages, you can replace croissant bread dough with pinch. However, I think the puff pastry has a better taste and a better texture. I do not recommend replacing phyllo dough. The phyllo dough is much more flaky and does not have the right texture for this recipe.
How to use puff pastry
The most important thing to remember when using puff pastry is that you don't want it to get too hot. If should be thawed from frozen, but not left at room temperature for a very long time. I like mine to warm up just enough for me to unroll it, so 30-40 minutes at room temperature. If the puff pastry is too hot, it will be difficult to work with and it will not swell as much when cooked.

One of the reasons I like puff pastry is that it's a great way to make an easy but elegant appetizer. I use it all the time, as for these Sausage Cheese Bites or this Gruyère Mushroom Tart. These puff pastry packages contain asparagus, gruyère and prosciutto and make a perfect tasty starter or brunch recipe. What is puff pastry?
